How do you float without skin? Reducing the book's title to this question would mean dragging the stroke of genius of a 24-year-old Slovenian into the one-dimensional grid of reality that this book so captivatingly departs from. In an easily readable plot, Eva Petrič succeeds in interweaving the stories of three generations and two countries – Slovenia and Argentina – so empathetically that a multi-voiced reality is experienced with thrilling intensity as a network of perception, memory, collective history, night and waking dreams, intuitions of art and transcendence, even object animism.
In her search for life-saving stem cells for her family scattered across three continents, the young photojournalist Laura, suffering from leukemia, runs, flies, and floats through her existential possibilities in conflicts between love and healing, the microcosm and the macrocosm, the symbolic world and everyday life, even between disembodiment and the necessary spiritual habitation. In her novel, Eva Petrič conveys similar borderline experiences as today – a good 15 years later – as an internationally recognized multimedia artist with her installations in public spaces that metaphorically combine science and existential thought-feeling.
Without Skin – Floating was written in Slovenian and English, also appeared in Spanish translation, and is now available for the first time in German.
