19.30 : official opening of the May Salon ZDSLU 2026, Gallery Velenje
The May Salon, which has been running continuously since 1909, is the exhibition with the longest tradition in Slovenia and is an overview of contemporary Slovenian visual art production. This year's exhibition features 174 visual artists. This year's May Salon focuses on a constructivist formal approach that, through contemporary art, raises questions about the relationship between aesthetics, society and the environment. Special emphasis is placed on current social and environmental challenges and the role of art in shaping a critical attitude towards the contemporary world. It also draws inspiration from the work of the poet Srečko Kosovel, whose constructivist poetics remains extremely relevant.
The curators of the May Salon 2026 are Marko Košan (Carinthian Gallery of Fine Arts) and Sara Nuša Golob Grabner (independent curator), who will design the exhibition together with colleagues from the Association of Slovenian Artists' Societies, the Velenje Gallery and the Coal Mining Museum of Slovenia.
